WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to send disappearing voice messages, expanding its existing “View Once” capability to voice notes. Users can now select a “one-time” icon each time they want to send a disappearing voice note, similar to the process for sending vanishing photos and videos. Once enabled, these voice notes will automatically disappear after being listened to.

The introduction of disappearing voice messages enhances privacy during conversations, especially for sensitive content.

WhatsApp ensures end-to-end encryption for these messages, but users are cautioned that alternative methods, such as the native screen recorder on Android phones, could still be used to intercept the messages. Therefore, it is advisable to send such messages to trustworthy individuals.

After sending a View Once voice message, users won’t be able to listen to it again. To confirm if the recipient has opened the message, the “read receipts” option must be enabled. Disappearing voice messages will remain available for 14 days (unless opened), after which they will automatically vanish.

Certain actions like forwarding, saving, starring, or sharing these disappearing voice notes and media are not possible. However, users can report inappropriate messages, and unopened disappearing messages can be backed up during the backup process.

WhatsApp will gradually roll out the View Once voice messages feature globally in the coming days. Users can check if they have received the update by updating their WhatsApp Android / iOS application. Once updated, a timer icon will appear next to voice notes.

Share your thoughts on this new WhatsApp feature in the comments, and if the feature is not yet accessible, it should be available soon.
