Apple has acknowledged the overheating issue on its latest flagship handsets, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and plans to release an iOS 17 software update very soon to fix the problem.
Early Reports of Overheating Issues
It all started last week when reports began emerging about some users experiencing overheating issues on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models even with normal usage, and the devices getting hotter than expected, along with processor slowdowns.
Some speculated that the new A17 Pro Bionic chipset was the reason behind the issue, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo pointed to the compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lightweight design for the iPhone 15 Pro models.
Apple’s Response
Contrary to the speculations, Apple said that the problem is due to an iOS 17 bug and recent updates to some third-party apps, including Instagram, Uber, and the racing game Asphalt 9: Legends, that are overloading the A17 Pro chip, causing overheating issues on iPhone 15 Pro handsets.
“iPhone 15 Pro models may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device, owing to increased background activity, Apple said in a statement to Forbes reporter David Phelan.”
Apple has also ruled out any possibility of a hardware problem and said the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium frame and aluminum substructure have nothing to do with overheating. Instead, they allow for better heat dissipation than previous stainless steel iPhones.
Possible Solutions
Apple is expected to resolve this problem by rolling out the upcoming iOS 17, which is currently in beta testing and set to launch in October. Alternatively, they might release a smaller software update, like iOS 17.0.3, specifically designed to tackle the bugs causing overheating problems.
Apple has not provided an exact release date for the fix nor did it mention how many customers were affected by the issue. It only said that the bug problem should be resolved soon.
What Can Users Do in the Meantime?
Here are some steps to help you solve the overheating issues on your iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Max in the meantime:
- Avoid using the device in hot environments.
- Close apps that you are not using.
- Reduce the brightness of the screen.
- Restart the device.
- If the problem persists, contact Apple support.
Conclusion
Apple is fully aware of the overheating problem affecting the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and is actively working on a solution. In the meantime, there are actions users can take to lower the chances of their devices overheating.
